Woman dies of ‘shock’

Srinagar, Sep 29: An aged woman, Jaana Begum died allegedly due to shock after being handed over a warrant by a policeman at Hazuri Bagh in the City Thursday.
Following the incident, the entire neighbourhood took to streets bringing traffic to standstill while demanding punishment against the “accused cop”. Police officials rushed to the spot to pacify the agitated mourners who had blocked the Airport Road.
Locals told Greater Kashmir that a policeman dropped in at her house this afternoon.
“Jaana who lived on the third floor of her house saw the cop coming towards her,” the neighbours said. “When Jana was handed over the warrant she died due to heart attack,” alleged her neighbours. They said that the warrant was for her grandson who worked in close-by tyre shop.
The deceased woman, they said, had occupied a migrant property nearby and warrant was received from Deputy Commissioner Srinagar following their failure to produce themselves before the authorities.
“There was dispute after the migrant filed complaint with DDC Srinagar that his(migrant’s) property has been encroached. So in that case policeman had dropped at her home to serve the notice in civvies,” they told this reporter.
However Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar Syed Ashiq Bukhari refuted the allegations sa ying that the woman was aged and died “natural death”.
“It was a civil warrant from DC Srinagar in a migrant property case. Our policeman dropped the same and the woman died. There is no fault of the cop,” Bukhari said.
He said that the autopsy of the deceased was being conducted to remove any confusion in the case.
DC Srinagar Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo was also present in police hospital at the time of the post-mortem when this report was being filed.
