Student Value Creation
We need to adopt innovative teaching-learning-evaluation styles in higher education
CLASSROOM BY DR NAZIR AHMAD GILKAR
The academic behavior of teachers in the Higher Education Institutions (HIEs) demands an immediate attention by them in creating and building upon an enriched academic environment towards a positive social change .The teachers are desired to create a shift in their outlook seeking professional engagements to adopt newer methodologies of teaching.
The teaching –learning process sans thinking does not make any academic improvement. A teacher by his profession is creative and innovative. Every teacher has uniqueness and originality because style is individual. And he is equipped readily with an inimitable and effective style of teaching to ignite minds and to provoke young students to ponder over and develop self confidence so as to explore intellectual horizons independently.
The science students are exposed to practice in laboratories. It offers them an opportunity to blend theory and application of a particular phenomenon. They are totally wedded to lab work that adds to their intrinsic academic worth.
The colleges imparting instruction in social sciences attempt varied and multi-dimensional interventions. ‘Dialogue’ and ‘Defense’ are very important methodologies as regards social sciences. The present pedagogy under the aforesaid captions is organized keeping in view a variety of preset objectives.
To reactivate students in order to double their efforts to effect vigour in their studies.
To hone skills of intellectual argumentation among social science students to defend or otherwise a particular concept, theory or thought etc.
To add value to the process of teaching –learning-evaluation by exercising zero tolerance for process risk in terms of academic loss and wastage.
The students of all the BA classes appear in ‘Dialogue’ and ‘Defense’ in batches for select units in each course of study. A team of experts from other colleges in the cluster is invited to conduct these innovative activities for evaluating learning outcome
The faculty engaged in the science and art of business education has been striving hard to harness talent ; sharpen skills, instill insight and promote analytical mind set among students. The concerned academics and researchers groom intellectual capital for various professions to serve the society at large. A variety of instructional strategies preferably activity oriented accordingly are used in business sciences including accounting education. The conventional methodology of course is aggressively in operation across the country.
The case method and brain storming mix has proven an effective teaching -learning pedagogy in accounting education. After formulating a case with regard to a firm on a particular problem by 2 or 3 students it is circulated among a bigger group (say 10 participants ) for their analysis and evaluation. A brain storming session is organized to generate creative and innovative ideas that help to find out reliable and workable solutions to the problems based on collective wisdom. Teaching - learning process performs this way a simulation tool modeled on the philosophy of leaning-by-doing. The process becomes thrilling enjoyable, stress free and makes students enthusiastic and adventurous.
The teachers are quite familiar with the contemporary pedagogical practices but in general do not employ same while transacting course content. The UGC has widened the operational domain of the college lecturers who have been re-designated as Asst/Associate Professors to perform a variety of academic activities rather than lecturing alone. Teaching has now necessarily to be supported by empirical and practice based input requiring Asst / Associate Professors to be actively engaged in research on latest trends in their respective academic disciplines .
The process value addition is closely associated with the academic performance indicators of the faculty. Once students divorce readymade note culture and rote memorization and make nights of the faculty sleepless to find out answers to their non routine and unknown queries the objective of Student Value Creation is achieved.
