Court directs police, admin to protect dignity of rape victim

Pulwama, Apr 11: A local court has directed the police and hospital administrations of the district Pulwama that no rape victim should be examined by any male gynecologist in the district.
  Chief Judicial Magistrate Pulwama passed the direction after a rape victim was produced before the court where she alleged that she was harassed by a male gynecologist during the medical examination.
 The police had produced the complainant before the court of Chief judicial Magistrate Pulwama for recording the statement under section 164 of CRPC.
 While recording her statement the victim said she was harassed during the medical examination which was conducted by a male gynecologist.
  “The concerned investigating officers in such cases are under obligation to respect the rape victims and while putting them to the medical examination they shall always be examined by a lady gynecologist” the court observed.
 The court said Special training requires to be imparted to the police officers conducting the investigations and it is the duty of the doctors and judiciary to protect the dignity of a rape victim.
 “The Chief Medical officer Pulwama  and other concerned officers should take every step to avoid examination of a rape victim by a male medico,” the court said.
 The court directed SSP Pulwama and SP Awantipora to issue directions to the Station House Officers and other police officers falling within their jurisdiction to ensure examination of rape victim by male doctors .
