More of girls study at Govt Boys Middle School Batamaloo
No playfield, no toilet; Institution lacks basic infrastructure
FAZIL QAYOOM
Srinagar, Apr 12: Though its name is Government Boys Middle School Lachmanpora, Batamaloo, seventy percent of the students are girls while the institution running for the past five decades craves for basic infrastructure including playfield than to talk of additional facilities.
RISKY ASSEMBLY
Situated in the first floor of an Auqaf Committee building, which houses shops below, the school has no compound, no toilets either.
Students have to offer the morning assembly prayers on the rooftop of shops, which have no fencing thus posing threat for their lives.
SPORTS TEACHER BUT NO GROUND
Despite having Physical Education Teacher, the students are being deprived of the games, which are part of the school curriculum.
“Apart from being poor in other infrastructure, we lack playground for students, depriving them of taking part in sports activities,” said a school teacher.
“The teachers are very dedicated and concerned towards our studies but we aren’t taking part in co-curricular activities as we don’t have our own playground to play,” said a student.
NO MIDDAY MEALS
The students were being offered midday meals under the scheme of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), which succeeded all over the country. But for the past few months, the scheme has been stopped at the Batamaloo school.
“We were being offered midday meals in the school but for the last few months we have to bring it of our own as the school authorities declined to continue to offer facility,” said a student.
OFFICIALS SPEAK
When contacted Zonal Educational Officer (ZEO), Batamaloo, Muhammad Akbar Parray said: “Due to the congestion in Srinagar City, it is difficult for us to arrange an alternative premises for the school that could replace the existing ill-constructed one.”
About the midday meals suspension, he said: “Unfortunately, the Director School Education has not forwarded the funds which led to the temporary stoppage of the midday meal scheme.”
“The time we will receive funds, food will be provided to the students accordingly,” ZEO added.
