WOMAN DELIVERS BABY IN HOSPITAL CORRIDOR

FAMILY MEMBERS, RELATIVES STAGE PROTEST

M M PARVAIZ

Ramban, Apr 14: A woman delivered baby in the corridors of district government hospital, here late last evening, after the hospital management allegedly refused to admit her.
Witnesses said the woman (named withheld) was shifted to the district hospital, last evening, by her relatives after she developed labour pains. However, the doctors on duty referred the lady to GMC Jammu on the pretext that she had some complicacy and needed specialized attention.
“The woman, however, gave birth to a baby in the hospital corridors as her family members were trying to arrange a vehicle”, said Abdul Ahad, an eyewitness.
He alleged that the patient was referred to Jammu as there was no gynecologist present in the hospital.
As the word about the incident spread in the area people assembled in the hospital premises and staged a demonstration. After a heated exchange of words with some of the medicos, the protestors ransacked furniture of the hospital.
Protestors alleged that the doctors posted in this hospital were not performing their duties and instead had developed a habit of referring most of the cases to Udhampur and Jammu.
However, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Muhammad Anwar, said the woman was properly attended. “However, the doctors were busy in making preparation for the victims of a road accident which had taken place at the same time on the highway,” he added.
