SMC Commr leads cycle rally for “Clean, Green Srinagar”
Srinagar, Apr 1: Stressing to realize the recently coined message of “Clean Srinagar, Green Srinagar”, Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Dr GN Qasba on Sunday Morning led a rally of around 700 cyclists on the famed Dal lake banks even as he urged the new generation to avoid using pollution causing vehicles.
Riding an Adidas bicycle, Dr Qasba stressed upon the people, particularly youth, to prefer ride bicycles over other vehicles on routine basis “as it is good for health and environment, alike.”
Recapping his college days, Dr Qasba said: “There was a time when leave apart students even the working class people including lecturers and officers would ride bicycle.”
“If we revive this tradition, there will be less of pollution, less of traffic jams and the City will stay healthy,” he told media persons adding “the youth shouldn’t feel shy of riding bicycles.”
Prominent among others who rode the bicycles in the rally were Change Group head and leading entrepreneur Shehla Sheikh, and professional cyclists from the J&K Cyclist Association.
The event flagged off by Divisional Commissioner, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon near Nehru Park culminated at SKICC where the participants where shown a documentary film on environment awareness by co-host Tourism department.
Dr Samoon, Director Tourism, Farooq Shah and Regional Director State Pollution Control Board, AM Dar however preferred a walk upto the destination while scores of people followed them on the five KM track.
Other who attended the event included officials from PDD’s Systems and Operations wing, LAWDA, SSP Srinagar, Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, SP Traffic, Haseeb Ur Rehman, DFO Urban, Syed Abid Nazir, DFO Social Forestry Abdul Hameed, head Disaster Management cell Aamir Ali and Shahnawaz, Research Officer SKICC, who anchored the SKICC function.
