Srinagar, Apr 20: Media Education Research Center (MERC), Kashmir University Friday organized a program in memory of Aasiya Jeelani on her 8th death anniversary, in which glowing tributes were paid to the deceased.
Speaking on the occasion Head of Department MERC, Prof Mufeed Ahmad said: “Aasiya was a journalist with courage who stood firmly on the principles and ethics of journalism without any compromise. She is indeed a pride of our nation particularly for the journalistic fraternity.”
Apart from faculty members and students, the function was attended by Aasiya’s family members and some of her classmates and friends who also spoke on the occasion.
While paying tributes to Aasiya a senior faculty member Prof Nasir Mirza said: “Aasiya was a journalist with a difference”.
“Unlike dominance of male reporters in journalism Aasiya was unique by parting from tradition to become a successful female reporter thus a source of inspiration for many,” Prof Nasir remarked.
Later on, HoD MERC presented a momento to Aasiya’s mother and lauded Aasiya as “a pride of MERC”.
Aasiya Jeelani was a pass out of 1998-99 Batch of MERC Department, KU. She was killed in a mine blast at Chandigam, Lolab in 2004 while reporting the encounter.
