New York, Apr 21: A 24-year-old Indian student at Boston University has died after he was shot in the head and leg by an unidentified person.
Boston Police department and university officials have not yet released the name of the victim as they are awaiting autopsy results and pending notification to the family.
However, an official at the Consulate General here told PTI that the victim is an Indian.
The young man was a student at the university's Graduate School of Management. The police said they got a call at around 3 in the morning of April 19 about a body lying in front of a house nearly a mile from the campus in Brighton. The shooting occurred about a mile from the BU campus in a residential area just off the busy Commonwealth Avenue.
When police reached the spot, the victim was receiving medical assistance from the Boston Fire Department as he was suffering from severe head trauma.
However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
No arrests have been made in the case yet. Homicide detectives are awaiting the autopsy results to determine the cause and manner of death but preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was suffering from gunshot wounds.
"We have added patrols for the neighborhood and detectives continue to look for clues in this tragic incident," Boston Police Captain James Hussey said.
The police is asking anyone with information about the killing to contact its crime and homicide units.
In a statement, university president Robert Brown said Boston police and university police are investigating the circumstances of the "dreadful crime" which he said appears to be an isolated incident.
