Within year of macadamization,Nammath road back to shambles
MUKEET AKMALI
Srinagar, Apr 22: Just few months after the main road of 90 Feet in Soura, commonly known as Nammath was macadamized and left open for vehicular movement, this corridor has developed cracks resulting in potholes, which are eating away the blacktop with each passing day.
The locals alleged that the Roads and Building Department (R&B) used substandard material in the construction and macadamization of the road. They demanded stern action against the concerned officials who were responsible for the work.
Seftain Ahmad, a resident of Ellahi Bagh said: “It shows the level of corruption in the departments. Just a year ago this road was macadamized but for now it has developed cracks and become a cause of inconvenience for the travellers.”
Besides, the residents said the manholes en-route are uneven as the authorities have failed to level them with the blacktopping.
“At places the manholes are above the road surface and elsewhere below making the travel risky…During past few months many mishaps took place because of this fault,” the residents said adding that it seems no planning was done in designing this road.
“We were happy without this drainage system, we don’t need it. Instead of bringing convenience, the drainage work brought along all miseries for us,” Ajaz Ahmad, a local resident said.
When contacted Chief Engineer Roads and Building (R&B) Mushtaq Ahmad Lone said: “This road was dug by NBCC for laying sewerage pipes and we have only done macadamization part of it.”
When asked about the cracks developed on the road, he said: “It will take some time for the road to settle down.”
“We presently had done patching of this road in order to fill the cracks and make the road motorable,” he added.
