Srinagar, Apr 23: The north City cops Monday claimed to have arrested three non-local burglars within 24 hours of the theft in Shaher-e-Khaas where from they had stolen jewelry worth around Rs 14 lakhs.
Addressing a press conference at Rainawari Police Station, the City police Chief Syed Ashique Hussain Bukhari said the theft occurred on Apr 19 at Saida Kadal and that the next day the accused were caught.
Giving details the SSP said the burglars struck the house of Athar Mustafa son of Sheikh Abdul Rahim of Saida Kadal when the family was out for holidaying in Pahalgam,
The family was informed by the neighbors that their doors were open prompting the Bukharis to return home only to find that the jewelry was missing. They immediately rushed to the police station and investigations were started.
During investigations the locals informed the police that they had seen an unknown Wagon R Jk02S-9840 parked in the area on the fateful day.
From the registration number, the SSP said, the police was able to track the mobile phone of its owner and police started to track it.
During call interception, the doubts came true that the burglars had used the same car. But by the time police found the suspects, they were heading towards Jammu and a team of the Rainwawari Police Station was rushed to the winter Capital.
The arrested accused have been identified as Shahaan Ahmad of Panch Teerthi, Yogesh Dogra and Akshay Kumar of Jani Pur.
“During on-spot sustained questioning in Jammu, they admitted to have committed the theft and have concealed the stolen gold items in the door of the vehicle. But they had left behind the cab at Gaw Kadal area,” the SSP flanked by SP north Skoket Shah and SP East Zulfikar Ahmed, said.
The police however said one of the accused happens to be a close relative of the family and he was scheduled to drive down the jewelry embedded vehicle to Jammu in the coming days.
“The vehicle was seized near Gaw Kadal and when the plastic covering of the door was opened, all stolen gold items were found concealed inside,” the SSP said adding FIR vide No: 16/2012 under section 454,380,12B RPC has been registered.
Meanwhile in another burglary case, on March 20 police Station MR Gunj received a complaint from Ghulam Muhammad Sheikh of Saraf Kadal that gold items worth more than Rs 10 lakh were missing from his home.
“During investigation it surfaced that the domestic help of the victim family namely Gulzar Ahmad had stolen the items along with accomplice Jahangir Ahmad,” Bukhari told media persons.
In another burglary police Station MR Gunj has recovered stolen electronic items worth Rs 50,000. The case, the police said, was solved within two days of complaint.
Other officials present in the press conference were SDPO, Khanyaar, Tahir Saleem Khan, SDPO, Maharaj Gunj, Dawood Ayoub and SDPO Nehru Park Police Ghulam Jeelani and SHO Rainawari.
