SIE observes World Book Day

Srinagar, Apr 23: The State Institute of Education (SIE), Srinagar, on Monday organized a seminar to commemorate “Word Book Day” at the auditorium of the Board of School Education, Srinagar.
 The seminar was presided over by the BOSE joint secretary Mehboob Iqbal.
 Addressing the seminar, the Joint Director and Principal SIE Srinagar  GM Dar said it was the need of hour to emphasize the importance of reading books to all people in general and children in particular to make them closer to the books and authors. He gave a brief account of historical background of the World Book Day.
 He said printed words have power to revolutionize peoples’ ways of thinking and living.
 “The motive behind celebrating the day is to create and promote culture of reading books among our children. Our collective and determined effort should be to devise the means and methods for fostering book reading culture in our society,” he said.
 He also suggested several measures to update the libraries and promote book reading habit among children.
 “There is need to upgrade libraries at plus two level in all training institutes and provision of allocation of grants under the heads: Books and periodicals, for teacher education institutions to enrich their libraries,” Dar said, adding that training component for the libraries for automation of libraries should be made a regular feature of the calendar of activities of RMSA.”
 Prof. G.R. Malik in his address threw light on the topic “Books and Human Civilization” saying that they are correlated.
 The BOSE joint secretary Mehboob Iqbal, Field Adviser, SIE, V K Mattoo, Chief Librarian, SIE, Gulzar Ahmad Wani and Research Officer, SIE, Shafaq’at Jehan also spoke on the occasion.
 The function was attended by the Joint directors of the school education department, Principals of DIETs and Higher Secondary Schools, Chief Education Officers and officials of SIE and DIET, Srinagar. The SIE had constituted different committees to facilitate holding of the function.
