Prez approves nomination of Sachin, Rekha to RS

New Delhi, Apr 26: President Pratibha Patil Thursday approved the nominations of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, yesteryears Bollywood actress Rekha and businesswoman and social worker Anu Aga to the Rajya Sabha.
"The president has approved the nomination of Sachin Tendulkar, Rekha and Anu Aga to the Rajya Sabha," Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Archana Datta said.
Batting maestro and Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar is all set to begin a new innings. This time it is away from the cricketing field and a foray into the political arena.
According to the Government sources, Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh had sent a communication to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday. On its part the Ministry will forward the same to President Pratibha Patil for notification, sources said. Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service.
The reports about his nomination to the Upper House gained credence after Sachin and wife Anjali met Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. She had wanted to meet the batting great and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic feat of scoring 100 international centuries recently.
Senior BCCI functionary and IPL chairman, Rajiv Shukla was also present on the occasion. Surprisingly, Shukla said he had no knowledge of Sachin's reported Rajya Sabha nomination.
The 39-year-old Tendulkar, who has brought many a laurel to the country through his exploits in the game, and Rekha, known for her brilliant and emotional portrayals in Hindi cinema in the 80s, will become members of Parliament under a provision of the constitution that allows the President to nominate 12 members to the Upper House.
Tendulkar`s nomination to Rajya Sabha has come as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. He completed the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries in March this year.
There is a strong feeling that due to Sachin’s active involvement in playing cricket he may be hard pressed for time. He has been a most apolitical person and not even been associated with a political cause. BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said , "If he is nominated, we will expect him to devote time to Parliament. It is serious matter."
Congress' Renuka Choudhary deflected the question on Sachin's nomination by saying, "It'll be nice if he is in Parliament. He'll bat and we'll bowl googlies to him."
