Quranic Humanism and Universalism
PROF G R MALIK
The Quran asks the believers to declare:
Say we believe in Allah and that which is revealed to us and that which was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and their progeny and in that which was given to Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord, we make no distinction between any of them and we submit to Him. (2:136).
In Surah Aal-i ‘Imran (3:84) Allah asks the Prophet to make a similar avowal.
This declaration of faith which is one of the recurrent themes of the Quran is grounded in the Quranic concept of the continuity and essential similarity of Divine guidance. The Quran tells us that man has been adequately equipped with the capability of coming to terms with the material reality and subjugating material forces but in the spiritual and moral sphere of life, which is ultimately related to the Unseen, he cannot do without Divine guidance. God has made this guidance available to man through a series of prophets raised from time to time in all communities and nations. Naturally this Divine guidance has always been the same in its essentials. As the Quran says:
He has ordained for you the religion which We enjoined on Noah and that which we revealed to you and that which we commended to Abraham, Moses and Jesus saying ‘establish the religion and be not divided therein.’ (42:13)
The Quran therefore, asks the believers to believe in all the messengers of Allah and not to discriminate against any of them. Any Muslim who refuses to believe in any messenger ceases to be a Muslim.
The Divine guidance which was the same in its essentials in now finally and perfectly enshrined in the Quran and its practical illustration in the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). This is the Quranic Humanism; no humanism and universalism can be more realistic and more tolerant than this.
