Media means accuracy

Getting the news and getting it perfectly well

MEDIAWATCH BY DR. FAROOQ AHMAD PEER

Nobody can deny the fact that the Media has brought about a transformation in the life of modern man. It has enabled the human resource to receive and assimilate more and more knowledge and thereby has mutated their intellectual capacities and outlook. It has almost wiped out illiteracy from the world and has made the human race more civilized, sensitized and refined. The sea of knowledge and information in the world is for greater than the earlier days only due to media.
Freedom of media is essential for the development of a healthy society and it is necessary that we should be free in outlook and understanding so that thoughts and ideas are expressed freely. Freedom of expression guarantees a free and liberal society where people can not feel chained or enslaved. The media needs to be free to express its crude as well as reformative ideas or opinions so that the doctrines of this fourth estate are upheld. However, the utterance of criticism must be on facts and reason and at the same time offer valuable suggestions.
A free and vibrant press is one of the greatest achievements of a democratic State. Having a free press means that authoritarianism cannot flourish. Our States survival and blossoming is also dependent on a vigorous and free press. It is observed that a huge number of media options have appeared on the world scene and the country of India is not far behind on this front. These options have surfaced in the form of electronic as well as print. Our State has also made its effort to get advanced in this area for the fact that it is way to get connected with the tide of the times and equip its human resource with the latest information, trends, and advancements in the diverse fields of life.  Though our State media particularly, the print media is delivering its professional duties in an honest manner   amidst strife-torn, turbulent and precarious circumstances yet the fallacies cannot be ignored. Nonetheless, to be plain and without prejudice recognition granted to hundreds of media options in print by the State have obliterated the image of media because quality has been overwhelmed by quantity.
Accuracy has gone into abyss and   presenting of facts has been shattered. The noted and reputed print media choices have worked assiduously and sedulously to achieve acceptability because their concern has been to present the facts in the right manner and without self-aggrandisement which is really a value of the institution of the fourth estate. It is discerned that among the same media there are some who resort to yellow journalism while presenting information, rectification and coverage whenever they feel disfavoured. The news may be simple but is presented in such a manner that it seems really something extraordinary and astonishing which misleads the public. What has not actually happened is presented in an exciting manner and what has not been uttered by somebody or conveyed is printed for the sake of making news without waiting for the logical conclusion. There is a great deal of misinformation floating and here the accuracy of the profession of media is lost. A reporter of any paper presents some misleading news when his own interests are not served though there are examples where media persons sacrifice their own interests for the sake of this fair profession. The media fraternity needs to keep a vigil on such cases that often resort to implicitly biased reporting. The media has the responsibility not only to be the watchdog of society but certainly a watchdog of their own fraternity for the sake of a healthy and transparent media.
The delinquency and misdemeanour carried in media can be overawed if covering of exactitude of facts is explored so that it relishes the craze of a better quality control. It has a supreme responsibility to transcend bias, selfishness and favours in reporting and discoursing problems of the society in a sensible fashion. The media can help in the working of society as well as the important institutions of the state to hunt for a better trajectory to growth, service and prosperity. It must work and progress with the blend of accuracy and elusion of prejudice, predisposition and preconception.
