Infiltration bid foiled, soldier killed in Gurez

SUHAIL AJMAL

Bandipora, Aug 9: Army on Thursday claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid by militants on Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez valley in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. One soldier has been killed in the encounter.
Officials said the militants attempted to enter the Gurez valley near Baktoor village in the wee hours Thursday. “However the militants were challenged by the soldiers resulting in a brief exchange of fire,” officials said.
“Soldiers near the RC Post detected some suspicious movement during the night. When the troops challenged the infiltrators, they started firing in which a rifleman was killed,” Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel JS Brar said.
The soldier has been identified as Chandra Singh.
Officials said one pistol and a grenade, left behind by the militants, have also been recovered from the spot.
Officials said the militants tried to sneak into this side at two different places. “They were in two different groups and tried to infiltrate at two different places. However their attempt was foiled,” they said.
However there are no reports of any militant casualties. “Since the infiltrators returned, casualties could not be confirmed,” Brar said.
This was the first attempt of infiltration by militants in Gurez valley this year.
