Imam shot at, injured
SUMIT BHARGAV
Rajouri (Jammu), Aug 15: Unidentified gunmen shot at and injured an Imam in this frontier district late last night, officials and reports said on Wednesday.
“The gunmen fired upon the Imam, Muhammad Taj, from a close range in Kotranka area. Bullets pierced through his left leg. After hearing the gunshots locals reached the spot and rushed him to the hospital,” locals told Greater Kashmir.
However, assailants managed to escape after carrying out the attack.
As the word about the incident spread people took to the streets and staged protests. They gave three days ultimatum to the administration and police to trace the assailants failing which they threatened to launch an agitation.
The local PDP MLA, Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali, condemned the incident and demanded a magisterial probe. “This does not seem to be a militant attack and it must be probed thoroughly,” the MLA said.
Police said that it has registered a case for attempt to murder and started investigations. “Preliminary investigation reveal that there was some dispute regarding the appointment of Imam in the local Masjid, which could be one of the reason behind the attack but we are looking into it,” a police officer said.
