Stunt bikers create havoc under Traffic police nose

SP assures drive against offenders

IMRAN MUZAFFAR

Srinagar, Aug 23: While the men-in-blue claim to have come down heavily on stunt bikers in the City, some of the stunting youth had a field day out Thursday  right outside the office of Traffic Police at Poloview.
At around 4: 45 PM, a group of stunt bikers, after making way from the Abdullah Bridge side zoomed onto the road outside the office of Superintendent of Police (Traffic) – shouting and hooting at other drivers. The bikers drove ferociously, blocking whole of the two-way road stretch.
“This is blindness on part of authorities. This menace has made our lives a hell. We cannot come out of the cars let alone walking,” said a postgraduate student, Ishtiyak Malik while looking at the stunting bikers.
“The authorities deliberately remain silent over the issue otherwise it is not a big deal for them to mend ways of this pampered lot,” he added.
Some of the bystanders cursed the parents of the bikers for having “unduly pampered their wards.” They equally questioned functioning of the Traffic Police and demanded strict action against the stunt bikers. “Why isn’t Traffic Police nabbing them on the spots where they stunt and fine them strictly?” they said.
Official records reveal that stunt biker accidents are increasing at an alarming pace. The details provided by officials at the Bone and Joint Hospital Barzulla reveal that on the day of Eid-Ul Fitr alone 10 stunt accidents were reported from the City.
“The stunt bikers come here with arms hanging and backs broken. On daily basis almost ten such cases are treated here. On Eid Ul Fitr alone ten major accidents occurred in the City,” an official told Greater Kashmir.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Haseeb-Ur-Rehman said the Traffic Police would start a special drive from next week against the stunt biking.
“Actually we are starting a special drive against this thing. Any biker seen breaking the law would be nabbed and fined severely. Last month we had seized almost 600 bikes but we released them following assurances from parents. But now we’ll go tough,” he said.
