When Traffic police constructed Masjid on main road
While the DPL Jamia Masjid has drawn appreciation from various quarters including prominent Ulema like Mufti Nazir Ahmed Qasmi, another Masjid constructed by the Traffic wing in ‘90s on the main road outside Kohthi Bagh Police Station is still being debated for having deprived the people of this much needed road connectivity in the busy City centre.
The story goes like this. Soon after the start of militancy in Kashmir, police closed a link road connecting MA Road with the Residency Road presumably on the pretext that keeping it open was “threat to the police station and the adjacent Traffic Police office”.
As the road remained closed, the Traffic police taking advantage of the situation, constructed a Masjid there bringing an end to any hope of reopening of this road.
The Masjid exists on the middle of the erstwhile main road while many Ulema say such a place isn’t fit for construction of the worship place. They say the construction has deprived people of much needed space adding that road was “just not right place” for such an initiative. But then the debate is on…
