The tuition craze
Look how messy this whole affair has become
EDUCATION
MUBASHIR MUFTI
Parraypora, Baghat has become a hub of educational institutions and tuition centres. Doting the Indira Gandhi Airport road from Burzulla Bridge to Hyderpora bypass, these institutions impart coaching from toddlers to students taking civil services test. Although it is a thriving industry, the teachers are not religious about receiving tuition fees; they do offer free coaching to needy and deserving candidates. Boys and Girls coming from different backgrounds, cities and villages come to these centers for seeking quality coaching. These tuitions charge from Rs. 4000- 5000 which can be paid in two installments.
First and foremost, this area is designated as residential area. No commercial activity can be allowed in this locality. Indira Ghandi Airport road from Airport to TRC is maintained by IAAL, which has delegated the job of maintenance of this road to JKPCC. The Agency has prescribed that no shop or a commercial activity shall open its front shutter on this road. The agency made rules that no vehicles other than those who ply to and fro from Airport to TRC shall be allowed on this road. The rationale behind this objective was to allow “a smooth and fast corridor or a superhighway to Tourists coming to valley.” These rules have been thrown to winds by shopkeepers who have opened their shutters on side lanes; with the result consumers park their cars haphazardly on the Airport road. This has increased chances of a major accident on this road. The widening of this road on both sides has not crystallized, with the result there is congestion on the roads.
At dawn, boys and girls in thousands invade this locality, as if aliens from another world have come down on earth. There is hustle and bustle on this road. Most of the boys are concerned with their studies. But they cannot keep away from the ill effects of media. Then there are street Romeos who imitate the television serials like Road Rowdies and undertake dangerous stunts, thereby exposing themselves to grave risks and passer bys have to take their own precautions. Now girls have also adopted this bike culture. The screeching halt of a bike carrying two pillion riders, and then rotating the bike at 360 degrees, sends shivers down the spine.
The way these students, especially boys, are dressed shows the involvement of their parents in their upbringing. Long hair is done in a pony tail, ear rings adorn their one ear, torn jeans about to fall down from their hips, and they speak in rough language like ruffians. They come from educated families and their parents are from respectable families holding good positions. The girls have adopted a middle path of choosing headscarf as a fashion gear.
The unruly bikers without silencers not only are responsible for noise pollution but are also a source of nuisance. The stunts they perform on roads need be curbed. There is possibility of a drug point on this VIP road that needs to be investigated. When a child does not comb his hair, is sleepy, and his eyes are swollen and bulged out, does not have an appetite, avoids sitting with the family, locks himself in a room and loves to keep his room dark, parents should be alarmed.
We all have a responsibility to see as to why the things are happening the way they are. After all the behaviour of our youth is something we all must be concerned about.
