Dr Faktoo’s family seeks his release

Srinagar, Aug 4: Family members of Muslim League Chairman, Dr Aashiq Faktoo, who has served over 20 years in jail have appealed the international community, including Organization of Islamic Nations, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to press for his release.
Faktoo’s family members also asked the Indian  civil society and government to adopt  same parameters in his case which they are pleading in the case of Sarabjeet Singh who is lodged in a Pakistani jail for past over 20 years.
“On one hand the Indian home and foreign ministries have been asking Pakistan to release Sarabjeet as twenty years was a long sentence for any crime. Ironically on the other hand, they have adopted a different yardstick for Dr Faktoo, who is serving life imprisonment since 1993,” they said.
“On May 31, 2012, Dr Faktoo has completed over twenty years in prison which as per Jail Manual and Prison’s Act amounts to life imprisonment. His detention now is illegal and he must be released in keeping with provisions of Jail Manual and Prisons Act,” they said.
