Sopore resident gets 6 year rigorous imprisonment

Jammu, Aug 4: A local court here today convicted a resident of Sopore area for carrying illegal arms and sentenced him to six year rigorous imprisonment.
 “Carrying illicit weapons is one of the organized white collar crimes which has assumed serious proportions globally,” Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Jang Bhadur Singh Jamwal observed while awarding six years rigorous imprisonment to Abdul Rashid son of Ghulam Ahmed of Sopore.
 The court observed that there has been an upsurge in the incidents of supply of weapons/explosive from across the border especially from the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Nepal border.
 “During the year 1999, carrying of weapons/explosive valued at more than Rs.18.4 million were seized as compared to Rs.6.5 million during 1998 indicating a threefold increase”, the court observed further.
 It added that during the year 1999, the three States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, Punjab and J&K accounted for almost 40% of the total seizures.
 Holding that the prosecution has proved the case against the accused, the court awarded three years rigorous imprisonment  and fine of Rs 10,000 under section 3/25 Arms Acts and rigorous imprisonment for a period of three years and fine of Rs 10,000  under section 7/25 Arms Acts. Court further ordered that both the sentences shall run concurrently.
