Organic farming
This refers to the guest column “Farming the Natural Way” by Ms. Maneka Gandhi (GK, August 2). We as Kashmiris might not like Maneka Gandhi because of her role in protecting canines, but I fully agree with her regarding the points she has raised about “Organic Farming” in Kashmir. People of J&K state are not at all aware about the hazards of chemical fertilizers and nothing has been done at any level to promote the organic farming in our State, which in fact is preferred nowadays in all the developed as well as developing countries of the world. Jammu & Kashmir has a great potential to shift towards organic farming as we have large amount of organic manure available with us in view of having a large population of cattle and livestock in rural areas. But unfortunately even in rural areas the chemical fertilizers are used on such a massive level that it seems people have totally ignored the organic farming and they are heading towards a big disaster. The government as well as NGOs working in environment sector must play their role in creating awareness among people of J&K about importance of organic farming which is very important for our sustenance.
