Water supply schemes left half way
People Crave For Potable Drinking Water
ALTAF BABA
Baramulla, Aug 5: Signifying non-seriousness of the Public Health Engineering Department to provide potable water to people of Baramulla district, only 25 out of 209 water supply schemes have been completed in past seven years in the district.
According to sources the PHE department Baramulla has miserably failed to complete the various water supply schemes which were aimed to provide safe drinking water facilities across the district. These schemes were funded by both by State Government and the Centre.
Sources revealed that around 209 various water supply schemes, funded by both state and the centre, were undertaken by the department of PHE Baramulla during the last seven years. However out of the 209 water supply schemes only 25 have been completed.
“The failure of the PHE department to complete various water supply schemes in Baramulla district has led to acute water scarcity in the area” said Abdul Aziz, a resident of Kandi Baramulla.
The lackadaisical approach of PHE department can be gauged from the fact that in various such schemes, the department has not even bothered to examine the spot where the water sources were to be developed.
The unplanned execution of at least seven such schemes in Baramulla district has cost the state exchequer Rs 2.62 crores.
According to sources, due to the non-completion of various water supply schemes, the department was forced to supply potable water through tankers in different areas of the district. This way around Rs 3.86 crores were incurred by the department.
