‘Truckload was destined for bakery shops’

Srinagar, Aug 8: A truck carrying around 1.60 lakh rotten eggs was seized at Parimpora Fruit Mandi ahead of its delivery at shops mostly dealing with bakery, officials said Wednesday.
The seizure was made by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) team led by Health Officer Dr Rubeena.
It was only after the Parimpora locals complained that the truck was emanating nauseating stench in the vicinity that the SMC team rushed to the spot to find the complaints true.
The Health Officer feared that such lot could have ended up at bakery shops had the civic body not reacted promptly. “What we’re investigating that such rotten lot isn’t sold in open markets but often delivered at bakery shops,” she added.
The truck was so stinking that some people including the SMC staff vomited. Sources said the SMC team initially wanted to count the rotten lot one-by-one. “But as the stench in every box was unbearable so we calculated the total by counting the number of boxes loaded in the truck,” the SMC officials said adding that the truck has been seized while the rotten eggs were destroyed.
