Save fish
I am a keen aqua hobbyist, angler and a fish conservationist. After graduating from IILM, New Delhi in 2008, I studied Business Course from University of California at Berkeley, USA. I felt sad after reading about the mysterious death of fish in Nigeen Lake. The fact is whenever the temperature of the water is high and there is sudden drop in temperature, usually 50 percent reduction, the fish cannot withstand this drastic fall or rise. It affects the fish immunity and causes high stress to the fish. All other reasons are just vague as they appear to be the symptoms of different situations but cannot result in such mass mortality of fish like high temperature – high temperature results in reduction in oxygen levels. If you postmortem a fish, its gills would appear red as result of lack of oxygen. High temperature causes internal organ damage of the fish, whereby the fish does not die immediately; it would stop feeding soon after the damage and eventually the fish dies. Another concern for the health of the fish is the heavy bio load of the water body. We need to check if there is over population of the fish in the lake as this affects the bio load as there is not enough food and oxygen for the fish and also the excretions of the fish which results in higher ammonia. We need to tackle the situation of weed development. Fresh water weed requires two basic things—sunlight and ammonia, and all the wastes emanating from houseboats and settlements on the lake provides it Ammonia. So we need to prevent the drainage pouring into the lake. Temperature fluctuation remains the key reason for the recent fish deaths while high temperature, heavy bio load and weed are the secondary reasons for the fish mortality.
