Land mafia on prowl in Hyderpora

Large scale filling of waterbody on; DDC assures action

Srinagar, Dec 9: At a time when waterbodies in the City are shrinking fast, alleged land mafia is actively land filling one big such restricted area near Lal Ded Colony, Hyderpora triggering resentment from the locals and environmentalists, alike.
The residents said kanals of lands are being eaten away by the “land mafia”. The residents said the government land was being encroached upon, while the authorities have failed to act against the accused.
Another concern of the residents is that the daytime movement of the tippers through the residential colony is deadly. Scores of tippers drive recklessly through the residential area of Lal Ded Colony day and night only for land filling.
About the daytime movement of tippers through the residential colonies in the south City areas the Superintendent of Police, Traffic (Rural) has been supporting the heavy vehicle traffic saying there is no such restriction. This has further infuriated the residents of nearby areas like Canal Road, who plan to move Court.
As about the Lal Ded Colony issue, the residents for now have knocked the doors of District Development Commissioner, Srinagar, Baseer Ahmed Khan.
When contacted Khan confirmed he has been apprised about the land filling issue. He said strict action would be taken against the accused including those driving the loaded tippers. “I have asked the concerned including the police to arrest the culprits at an earliest,” Khan told Greater Kashmir.
