Doctor arrested for infant murder
‘Body Was Thrown Into Nallah’
SHAHID RAFIQ
Kupwara, Dec 12: Police in this frontier district have arrested a doctor of sub-district hospital Kupwara and two sweepers for allegedly performing an illegal delivery and helping in the subsequent murder of the baby before throwing its body into Kehmil Nallah.
On October 10 this year, Police had registered a case FIR No. 362/2012 U/S 318, 302 RPC after finding body of a new born baby in Kehmil Nallah. After thorough investigation, police got to the lady who had given birth to the baby.
On being questioned, the unmarried woman revealed the name of the doctor and other two accused who had carried out the illegal delivery and subsequently murdered the baby before throwing the body into the nallah.
Police raided the hospital on Wednesday and arrested gynecologist Dr Shan-i-Alam along with sweepers Naseema and Nazir Ahmad.
“All the three accused have been remanded to police custody,” said SSP Kupwara Muhammad Irshad.
Police said the accused doctor is also involved in case FIR No.77/2009 U/S 312, 315 RPC of P/S Tangmarg which has already been charge-sheeted before the court of law and is under trial.
When contacted, Chief Medical Officer Kupwara, Dr. Abdul Majeed, said, “Law will take its own course. We are cooperating with the police.”
“As per accused doctor’s statement, the patient came to the hospital along with two women and a man. After examination, delivery of the woman was conducted and a dead baby was born which was handed over to his mother,” the CMO said.
However, BMO Kupwara Ghulam Nabi Lone said there was no record of this particular delivery in the hospital records, which points fingers at the intention of the accused doctor.
Sources said the post mortem examination of the baby had revealed torture marks on the body, thereby implying that she had been murdered.
