Saffron production
A recent news report from Radio Kashmir highlighted increase in saffron production during the recent harvest as a consequence to efforts made under National Saffron mission during past 2 years. The veracity of this report cannot be challenged at this juncture as production figures need be collected by concerned authorities in charge of project and highlighted. As per established records the area under saffron cultivation which was 5361 hectares in 1997 and production at 173.7 quintals with average yield of 2.34 kg per hectare has reduced to area under cultivation to 3675 hectares, yield to 91.88 quintals viz 2.5 kg per hectare.
The main reasons for this decline are lack of irrigation facilities, lack of demonstration centres showing various modes and inputs needed for increased yield and quality, gradual decline in price of saffron due to import of saffron from Iran mostly by smugglers and lack of organic manure centres within cultivable areas. The mission has so far put its efforts mostly towards improvement in seedling qualities but main attention has to be directed on priorities specified above.
