Bund construction takes ugly turn at Nawa Kadal
House collapses, 2 structures develop cracks
SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI
Srinagar, Dec 16: A house collapsed while two other structures developed cracks when the Irrigation and Flood Control department was constructing base for a bund on the banks of river Jhelum at Khanqah-e-Sokhta Nawa kadal here.
The incident occurred around 9.00 am when the construction of a bund was going on full swing near Rupa Bhawani Mandir. Panic gripped the entire area when a single storied house near the spot suddenly collapsed, however no one was hurt in the incident. Two adjoining houses developed cracks.
The houses belonged to Ghulam Muhammad Wani son of Haji Abdul Salam Wani, Abdul Majid Wani son of Habib-ul-llah Wani, Farooq Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Muhammad Wani, Mehraj-ud-Din Wani son of Ghulam Muhammad Wani and Muhammad Yousuf Wani son of Muhammad Sultan Wani.
Pertinently due to flash floods last year a wall of a Masjid and compound of a widow was washed away in the same area. The residents said the department has failed to undertake repairs as a result the Masjid and a house are on the verge of collapse.
Meanwhile, the Masjid Intizamia Committee Khanqah-e-Sokhta led by its president demanded immediate safety measures in the area to prevent further damage.
“We will be forced to take to streets if the authorities fail to construct bund near the Masjid and take other safety measures,” he said.
