Increase in dog populace poses threat to humans

Kunzar (Tangmarg), Dec 19: Recently about twenty dogs attacked a girl at Rawanpora village here in north Kashmir. The girl sustained critical injuries in the attack. She was hospitalized and is undergoing treatment in the hospital.   
 Dog population in Kunzar township and adjoining villages has been increasing alarmingly posing threat to the lives of the people especially the children. Though the dog menace is common in Kashmir but the problem has got compounded here as hundreds of animals are slaughtered in the township everyday. Irony is that there is no slaughter house in the area.
 As such the left out parts of animals are thrown in the open and it has become a bulk feed for the canines, whose population has grown manifolds in the recent years. 
 Dogs have unleashed terror in Rawanpora, Mulgam, Devbugh, Hardebani, Batpora, Gonipora, Chanpora, Kassai Mohalla, Bongam, Ratnipora, Ogmuna, Gokhama and Rarem. Scores of people of these areas have been bitten by dogs.
 When contacted, Executive Officer Municipal Committee Kunzar Farooq Ahmad Rather said, “We cannot do much as giving poison to dogs is prohibited.”  
 "However, we have recommended the government to set up slaughter houses in the area. As soon as we get the nod we will construct slaughter houses,” Rather added.
