Srinagar, Dec 20: Known among the winter sports enthusiasts as the best winter sports destination in Country, Gulmarg is gearing to host many events to woo tourists all over the season.
To keep Gulmarg bustling with activities throughout the season the local hoteliers, Gulmarg Development Authority, Cable Car Corporation Gondola, Tourism Department, Winter Games Association of J&K, Indian Institute of Ski and Mountaineering, Youth Services and Sports Department and Ski Association of Delhi has formed a group that has chalked a calendar of activities for the whole season.
The calendar is such that it will keep Gulmarg bustling with Winter Sports activities through the season and will keep visitors excited all the time.
The group has chalked out calendar for organizing different activities like ice skating camp, snow cycling, marathon, free style ski, junior & senior ski championship, ski touring and Gulmarg global derby run that stretch from December to February end.
It is first time that all the stake holders have joined the hands and have chalked out joint calendar to market and make Gulmarg attractive for the winter sports enthusiasts.
“The idea is to create common plate form to ensure the streamlining of events for the entire winter duration,” said member of organizing group and Director Pine Place Resorts Mir Mudasir.
“We have formulated a common programme that stretches from December to February end involving different winter sports activities. Not only traditional ski events would be held but we will be organizing cycling, marathon running, and free style skiing and even ski touring this season,” he said.
He said, “The events will kick-off with Ice-Skating camp on December 21 in which around 20 to 30 local participants would get training from outside coaches. “After that we will be organizing snow cycling, marathon run and free style ski events on December 31. From January 15 to 17 we will organize sub-junior, junior and senior ski championship.”
“In the first week of February we will be hosting ambassador’s cup followed by ski touring and annual global derby ski run in later part of the month,” he added.
About the need to form group and chalk our plans in advance he said, “Gulmarg has got tremendous potential in winter sports. It is most affordable winter sports destination in the world and we need to market in a better way. Usually what has been happening in past that there used to be no coordination the stake holders due to which we were not able to keep Gulmarg bustling with activities throughout the season”.
“To keep bad management aside we have formed group this season in well advance and every one from Hoteliers to GDA to Winter Games Association are working hard to make this season a grand one,” he added.
To keep all facilities ready for the upcoming busy season Gulmarg Development Authority has kept everything ready.
“All the arrangements are ready for both expert skiers and basics level. Lifts are undergoing renovation and they will functional in a week or so. Ice-Skating rink is ready and will host coaching camp from tomorrow. For the high adventure skiers who ski down from G-2 to G-1 we have made lot of changes during the summer. We have smoothened the area and Gradient has been reduced. For averting avalanches we have now explosives available with us,” said Chief Executive Officer GDA,
About the safety of skiers, he said, “The ski petrol team that looks after the skiers will now be stationed at Kongdoori round the clock and that will also help us to start Gondola in early morning hours”.
Meanwhile the Winter Games Association of J&K would be celebrating its 25 years on December 27. In that connection association would be holding its meeting at Gulmarg under the chairmanship of its President Farooq Ahmad Shah.
