Govt recommends inclusion of Gojri in Constitution

Jammu, Dec 22: Jammu and Kashmir government has recommended Gojri language for inclusion in the eighth schedule of Indian constitution.
Official sources said that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in his official communiqué, sent to Union Home Minister, has recommended the inclusion of Gojri language in the Indian constitution. Two other largely spoken languages in Jammu and Kashmir, Kashmir and Dogri, are already listed as Indian Languages.
They said that the recommendations were sent in the month of September this year but the state government could not make the announcement due to the Modal Code of Conduct.
“The process was on from last many years and finally the government after being satisfied with the documents prepared by the Academy of Arts, Cultural and Languages and recommendations of State Board for Development Gujjars and Bakerwals finally recommended inclusion of Gojri language in the eight schedule of Indian constitution”, sources told Greater Kashmir.
“The Chief Minister alongwith his Official Memo (No DO-CUL/ACAD/101-2012) has also provided the relevant information on the language and the population speaking it”, sources said adding that the basic document was prepared by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages, Gojri section headed by Dr Javaid Rahi.
This is the second time the state government has recommended the language for inclusion in Indian constitution. Earlier the state during the governor’s rule in the 1990s had made the recommendation for an official status to Gojri.
Gojri is one of the oldest and significant languages of the south Asian sub-continent. It is spoken by the Gujjar tribe — an ethno-linguistic minority of the state.
