Srinagar, Dec 23: In a bid to woo tourists for New Year celebrations in Kashmir valley, Tourist department would organize number of events in Gulmarg.
“We are going to organize special events for celebration of New Year in Gulmarg skiing resort,” said Director Tourism Talat Pervaiz.
“Tourism department will organize sports events like snow ruby, ice skating, snow cycling and cracker shows,” Pervaiz said adding that the department is hopeful of having good number of visitors at skiing resort.
“Currently there are more than 1500 tourists who are staying at Gulmarg and they are scheduled to stay till January 1 next there. Also we are expecting good number of visitors who will visit Kashmir and celebrate arrival of New Year at Gulmarg,” he added.
Meanwhile, tourism players are optimistic about having good number of tourist arrival to celebrate New Year.
“Tourist department has done well by organizing skiing and other winter sport activities at Gulmarg. We are excepting good number of tourist to visit Kashmir at this time of the years,” said Faiz Bakshi, president Kashmir Hotel and Restaurants Owners Federation (KHAROF).
KHAROF also appreciated The Kyber Group for coming up  with the state-of- art Hotel at Gulmarg. “This hotel will help the tourism sector in wooing high-end tourist and skiers. The Kyber Hotel is I think of the best hotel in north India.”
Secretary Houseboat Owners Association Muhammad Rafi Karnai  said it is good step by tourism department to organize skiing and winter sports at Gulmarg in view of New year celebrations.
“It would be good beginning for our tourism and we hail tourist department. By organizing sports events like snow rugby, ice skating, foreign tourist would get  attracted by these events  and will prefer to celebrate New Year here instead of going to other tourist destinations,” Karnai said.
According to tourism players, the hotels at Gulmarg have occupancy rate of 80 per cent these days. It is believed that number will further go up in coming days.
