Vesu Industrial Estate distant dream
Vesu (Qazigund), Dec 25: Ten years ago government had demarcated land for an industrial estate along the Srinagar-Jammu highway here in south Kashmir. However, not a single industrial unit has so far come up on the proposed site.
The 250 kanal of land acquired from the locals for the industrial sector here would have eased the pressure from a few industrial estates already functioning. The people already associated with the sector had pinned great hopes on this estate.
However, the only developmental work that has been done on the land till date is the fencing.
With no electricity, water supply and proper roads within the estate.
Sources in the department said that every year lakhs of rupees are sanctioned for the estate; however the money gets released after March 25 and needs to be utilized by the end of the month.
“How is it possible to have the work done and release the funds within five or six days? Still we have been able to get the fencing part done and it is an achievement given the apathy on the part of the higher ups,” said an official.
They said that this year too Rs 35 lakhs were sanctioned after March 25 money had to be utilized till March 31, as a result nothing much could be done.
The fraternity, associated with the industries, said that on one hand the government puts so much stress over the industrial development of the Valley and on the other a simple estate takes altogether decades to get completed.
“There is so much dearth of the space to be used for the industrial purpose and the announcement of this very estate had raised our hopes, but little did we know that it will take so much time to get completed. It really would have been a boon for the industrial sector here,” said Muhammad Tahir, who runs a unit from a private rented space.
Another youth, wanting to set up an industrial unit, said that he has been running from pillar to post since last three years but to no avail, “There are no jobs in the Valley to look for and hence I decided to do something on my own. After being on my toes for the last two years I stand exactly at the same place I started from. This new estate was a ray of hope but I think they don’t want us to be self sufficient,” said Mehmood ul Haq.
“ Though we have few industrial units in the district like the one in Islamabad and Bijbehara town but there is not much space available for setting up new units or to the already existing ones to expand their business,” said Farooq Amin, Managing Director of Kanwal Group of Industries.
He urged the authorities to immediately taken up the work on the proposed industrial estate at Vesu.
