Choked drains at Naveedabad irk inhabitants, authorities mute

‘Drainage mess has affected our social relationships’

Srinagar, Dec 27: Despite spending crores of rupees on construction of drainage system in Srinagar, most of the drains in many localities here are choked in absence of regular cleaning.
Inhabitants of Naveedabad, Tengpora here are living a miserable life as sewage water has inundated all the routes leading to the area. The inhabitants said due to lack of maintenance over the years, drainage system in the area has been rendered defunct.
“We are virtually living in a cesspool from past over a month due to failure of authorities to restore drainage system here. The problem is compounded as authorities have diverted sewage water of adjoining areas to our locality. The sewage water has inundated lanes and even our lawns. Our life has been turned into a hell,” the aggrieved inhabitants said.
“It is difficult for us to venture out of our houses are all lanes and by-lanes are inundated with sewage water. In case of snowfall, the problem will attain horrendous ramifications,” said Muhammad Hanief a local.
“Our wards cannot even attend their schools, universities and private tuitions. Many of them sustained injuries after they attempted to walk through inundated lanes which are dotted with potholes. This has taken a heavy toll on their studies,” he said.
The inhabitants said the sewage water has seeped into foundation of their houses. “Due to water-logging, walls of many houses here have developed cracks. We many times apprised the concerned authorities about the issue but our pleas met with deaf ears,” said Abid Salam a local.
They said if the problem is not immediately addressed, there is every possibility of outbreak of diseases. “Our children are already suffering from various water borne infections. Human excreta overflows in lanes here. The problem has affected our social relationship. We are facing a type of social boycott due to drainage mess. Most of our relatives and friends have stopped to visit us as lanes in our locality are inundated with sewage water,” he said.
