Highway closed on Friday evening
Ramban, Dec 28: Fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions led to the closure of Jammu-Srinagar highway on Friday evening. However, officials said the situation will be reviewed Saturday morning keeping in view the weather conditions.
Official sources told Greater Kashmir that following fresh snowfall at Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop, the Traffic Department announced closure of highway at 6 PM. “The road is slippery and the step was taken as a precautionary measure”, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Shakeel Ahmed Baig told Greater Kashmir.
The traffic officials here pressed flying squad into service this evening and made announcements asking all the vehicles to ensure crossing of Jawahar Tunnel by 10 PM. “We will not allow any vehicle from either side and you are requested to proceed for your destinations,” the officials announced at almost all the market places along the highway, here.
A traffic police official said that the vehicles have been stopped at Nagrota nd Qazigund, while the first priority was to ensure that no vehicle is stranded on the highway.
He said that the situation will be again reviewed Saturday morning. “The traffic will be allowed only if climatic conditions improved”, officials said.
