‘118 militants infiltrated this year’

Srinagar, Dec 30: Days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that he won’t be able to give the exact figures about the number of militants who infiltrated into the Valley this year, officials have put the number of infiltrators at 118.
A senior official of the State’s Home Department told Greater Kashmir that there was disparity in numbers given by different security formations operating in Kashmir. He, however, said that the figures provided by the Multi Agency Center (MAC) are valid and accepted by the Union Home and Defence Ministry as authentic. “They (MAC) have given these figures quite recently,” he said and added that as per MAC figures 118 militants have infiltrated into the Valley this year.
MAC, according to the official, in its report has said that these militants have succeeded in crossing the Line of Control (LoC) from various points in north Kashmir. “The infiltration, MAC says has taken place from Gurez, Machil, Nowgam, Uri, Keran and Tanghdar sectors of north Kashmir,” the official said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during a recent press briefing at Sheeri Baramulla in north Kashmir admitted that there is disparity in number of militants who have infiltrated this year. “I cannot put across any specific number of militants who infiltrated this year,” he had said, adding that Army has dished out one number and other agencies are saying some other numbers. “Let them reconcile the numbers. Then I will be able to tell you the exact number,” he had said.
However, the Army is tight-lipped about the number of militates who infiltrated this year. “Everybody accepts MAC figures,” a senior Army official of 15 Corps told Greater Kashmir.
Giving the break up about the number of infiltration bids foiled this year, the officer said that 15 infiltration bids were foiled at different places at LoC. “In five bids 22 militants were killed at LoC this year,” Army official said.
Giving the break up of infiltration attempts from last some years the official said, that the numbers were 342 in 2008, 485 in 2009, 489 in 2010 and 247 in 2011. Of them, 57 militants were successful in infiltrating in 2008, 114 in 2009, 95 in 2010 and 52 in 2011.
