Gundi Panah Middle School Building ‘Unsafe’

GK NEWS NETWORK

Budgam, Dec 30: A school in Gundi Panah village in this central Kashmir district is under construction for the past four years. Upgraded as Middle School some years back, the School falling in Hardpanzoo zone continues to operate from two-room Auqaaf building.
160 students are accommodated in the two rooms, making it extremely difficult for them to manage.
“Two rooms are just not enough to accommodate over 160 students. Four years after its up-gradation, very little has been done to speed up the construction of the new school building,” said a local resident, Abdur Rashid Khan.
He said there are just four teachers in the school. “The construction on the new building is going on at a very slow pace. So far only four walls have been established.”
Surprisingly, the Auqaf building, wherefrom the school is operating, has developed cracks and has been declared as ‘unsafe’ for accommodation purposes. “The Education Department is playing with the lives of the children. It is unfortunate that four years after its up-gradation, the Department has done little to ensure that the students are properly accommodated,” said a group of locals.
They accused the Education Department of up-grading schools for the heck of it. “What is the fun of up-grading schools when you can’t accommodate children properly,” they said. “The Auqaf building is unsafe for the students. So the Education Department must ensure that the new school building is completed as soon as possible.”
As a result of ‘pathetic condition’ of the Auqaf building, the students have to study in open sky.
The non-availability of school buildings is not limited to this village only. Dozens of other villages in Budgam are operating from rented accommodations, most of which have been declared as unsafe for children. These include a Government Primary school at Rahkai Arizal where five classes are taught in one room. “The people living here are financially weak. They cannot afford to admit their wards in private schools,” they said. “This is an opportune time for the Education Department to complete the new building as the schools have gone for winter vacations.”
When contacted, the ZEO Hardpanzoo Zone refused to comment on the matter.
