Mountaineering Association celebrates silver jubilee

Jammu, Feb 13: A colourful extravaganza marked the 25 years of existence of Mountaineering Association of Jammu Kashmir at Police Auditorium, Gulshan Ground, here yesterday.
 On the occasion a number of mountaineers, sport climbers and affiliated clubs of the Association, institutions who promote adventure sports as also prominent personalities from outside the state were felicitated for their contributions.
 The main attraction of the function was Tsering Ladol from Leh, the only women Everest summiteers of JK.  She scaled Everest in 2005 at the age of 18 from the difficult Tibet side. Tadol was honoured with a cash prize of Rs 12,000 by the Association.
 Others, who were honoured in the field of mountaineering included Everesters, Ram Singh, Dr Shayam Magotra, Sajad Haider and Stanzin Youthog, the first Indian girl to scale Shivling peak.
 The first international sport climber of JK, Harjot Kour was also honoured along with golden sport climber of JK, Shivani Raj Kaith. Other prominent awardees in sport climbing included Akshit Mahajan, Rajiv Sharma, Bhawna Sharma, Suraj Singh and Rohini Chib.
 Seven schools were also awarded for their substantial contribution for the promotion of adventure activities along with 12 affiliated clubs of the Association.
 Earlier, general secretary of the Association, Ram Khajuria in his general report, highlighted the activities organised by the Association during the last 25 years.
 In today’s Silver Jubilee function, Minister for Revenue, Raman Bhalla was the chief guest, who presented various awards to distinguished mountaineers and climbers of the state. He was accompanied by Member Legislative Assembly, Ashwani Sharma and Commissioner Secretary, Home, B R Sharma.
 Prominent among others present were Additional Director General of J&K Police, K Rajendra Kumar, Neeru Goswami and Ruby Sharma.
