Traffic diversion through colony interiors irks inhabitants

NOWSHERA DRAINAGE WORK FALLOUT

MUKEET AKMALI

Srinagar, Feb 13:  The drainage work on the Soura-Nowshera road is again in news for wrong reasons: This time for traffic diversion through residential colonies in the area even as the main road continues to be inaccessible.
The drainage work on the main road of Nowshera has proved nuisance for the inhabitants of inner Mohallas as the traffic is being diverted through these link roads, the complainants said.
According to locals, the drainage work, on for the past two months, has proved a mess for them due to the traffic diversion through inner link roads of Chanapora and Mundibal colonies.
Nasir Ahmad, a resident of Chanapora, Nowshera said: “Since the day officials have diverted vehicular traffic through our colony road, our houses have developed cracks due to vibration and if the situation remains same,  we fear the structures may collapse anytime.”
Nasir flanked by other resident said these link roads are not constructed for heavy vehicular movement.
“We are facing tough situation as apart from risk to our houses we fear our children, if allowed to go out, can be hit by the heavy rush of speeding vehicles,” the residents said.
Further, these roads have developed potholes due to heavy vehicular rush.
“Authorities look concerned about the drainage work alone  but least bothered towards its fallouts,” said Ghulam Nabi an elderly resident of Chanapora.
Similar is the tale of adjoining Mundibal. A shopkeeper there said that diversion of vehicular traffic has made their lives miserable.
“It has adverse impact on our business as most of the customers prefer going elsewhere because they fear a mishap on our road which witnesses huge traffic inflow,” he said.
When contacted the Incharge Officer of National Building Construction Corporation NBCC, Rafiq Ahmad, said: “We are doing our best to finish the work at an earliest so that the traffic movement could be restored on the main road.”
When asked how much time it would take to complete the work, he replied: around a fortnight.
