Farmers to get 1 lakh soil health cards

Srinagar, Feb 23: A day-long awareness cum training camp on Soil Testing was organized by Agriculture Department at Lal Mandi, here.
The aim of the camp was to impart awareness to officers and officials of the Agriculture Department regarding Soil Sample Collection, Analysis and Recommendations regarding application of Macro and Micro nutrients required for optimum and sustained production of Cereals, Pulses, Vegetables and Fruit Crops.
On this occasion, Agriculture Chemist, M Mubarak Reshi said that such awareness programmes will be held across the valley and farmers will be facilitated by spot sampling and testing through operation of Mobile Soil Testing Vans and One lakh Soil Health Cards will be issued to the farmers in the first instance.
The Soil Testing Laboratories will be established and upgraded in the districts as well.
The Soil Health Cards will be an indicator of soil status of the farmer’s fields which will regulate the usage of fertilizers and manures for optimum production of crops, an official statement said.
The experts of the department highlighted the importance of soil testing, judicious use of fertilizers, importance of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, Micro Nutrients and conservation of soil and maintenance of soil fertility. The experts expressed that unbalanced usage of chemical fertilizers and micro nutrients will lead to barren conditions of fields if continued for a few years.
