6 model villages in B’pora san basic amenities

SUHAIL AJMAL

Bandipora, Feb 26: Despite Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Ali Muhammad Sagar claiming that 115 villages across JK have been turned into model villages and work on remaining four is nearing completion, six model villages in this north Kashmir district san basic amenities.
The six model villages in this district are: Chaki Gansatan, Markundal, Ahamsharief, Garoora, Budugam, and Shagund. The foundation stone of three model villages, Chaki Gansatan, Markundal and Ahamsharief was laid by Sagar since NC led coalition came into power.
Aham Sharief has witnessed only one developmental work since the foundation stone was laid. "We were happy when it was declared that our village will be developed as model village, but concerned departments have only carried out one developmental work i.e. they have repaired a faulty drain in the area,” villagers said. "We were told that two buildings will be constructed, but there was no mention of setting up of park, community centre and information centre and making lighting arrangements.”
Residents of Cheki Ganstan rued that the government had declared that their village will be turned into model village but community centre and marriage hall were constructed at Rakhi Shilvat. "Government is befooling us. We were told that every facility available to people in the city will be provided at our doorsteps but nothing has been done so far" said Ghulam Mohiuddin.
He alleged the activists of the ruling party are occupying a few buildings that were constructed in the area.
Residents of Markundal village said only one community hall was constructed in the village and government claimed that Rs 2 crore were spent for developing our village into model village. “Our area has no drains, electricity system is in shambles and roads are in dilapidated condition,” residents said.
They alleged the “lack of coordination” among the concerned departments has added to their miseries. “Despite our village being conferred the status of model village nothing has changed,” they added.
Residents of Garoora, Budugam and Shahgund, declared as model villages during the Cong-PDP regime, said a few buildings were constructed, lighting system was arranged but the rest of the construction and developmental work was halted due to unknown reasons.
Talking to Greater Kashmir Assistant Commissioner Development Rural Development Department Nazir Ahmed said, “The work on the three villages taken up as model villages during last two years is going.”
