2 credit card fraudsters held in Pattan
Srinagar, Feb 3: Police has arrested two credit card fraudsters involved in credit card transaction worth 24 lakh in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A Police spokesman in a statement identified the accused as Afaq Ahmad Zargar son of Bashir Ahmad Zargar of Ahmad Nagar Srinagar and Muzaffar Ahmad Wani son of Nazir Ahmad Wani of Buchpora Srinagar.
“They were owners of a computer sale outlet ‘A M Group’ at Pattan. The duo used fake credit cards to dupe a bank to the tune of about Rs 24 lakh. All the credit cards were swapped at the POS machine installed at ‘A M Group’. The transactions were made through international credit cards only, from December 19 to 24, 2011,” he said.
“Preliminary enquiry reveals that the persons whose credit cards were used, had in fact never visited the Valley, but their passport and visa copies were used as proof of the transactions. The cards used in these transactions belonged to persons from Canada, USA, Great Britain and Brazil.”
Police has taken cognizance and registered a case under section 420, 468, 471 RPC, he said adding investigation was on and efforts were on to nab the chain of the fraudsters. “The handiwork of some persons outside the State is also suspected,” he said.
Meanwhile, police has asked the people, traders, credit card holders and POS machine holders to follow the advisories to check unauthorized use of credit cards.
The advisories include all POS owners should properly identify the owners of the credit card who come for shopping at their establishments, in case of International cards & cards involving huge transactions. Besides the POS owner should satisfy himself that only the owner of the credit card is swapping it and documents taken as proof should match the original passport or document held by the person. “No credit card owner should handover the card to any other person, as it may be misused.”
