Budgam NGO gets Rs 1 cr IDB assistance

Srinagar, Feb 6: A little known non-governmental organization, claiming to be working in Budgam district, has received assistance worth Rs 1 crore from Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
As per the details available on IDB website, the shadowy organization namely Society for Promotion of Culture and Education in Budgam town has received assistance of US$ 185,000 for the construction of school under special assistance projects from IDB’s Waqaf Fund.
IDB’s special assistance Waqaf programme is aimed at supporting the economic and social development of Muslim communities in non-member communities, in particular in the education and health sectors.
Repeated attempts by this reporter to get the exact address and work undertaken by the beneficiary organization - Society for Promotion of Culture and Education in Budgam proved futile as district administration and police said they have to check the records first to ascertain the veracity of the said NGO.
Deputy Commissioner Budgam Muhammad Rafi said he has no off-hand information about any NGO active by this name.
“It might be active in the district but I will have to check the records first,” he said.
