AGENCIES

New Delhi, Dec 31: In a New Year message to the nation, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today said that he will personally work to provide an honest and a more efficient government.
The PM also said that the government is committed to a strong Lokpal and that it was unfortunate that the bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha.
"We have taken several steps to deal with corruption; these initiatives will take time to have full effect and we must be patient...Corruption is a serious problem that needs a multi-dimensional response;Lokpal and Lokayuktas are important part of the solution," the PM said.
"It is unfortunate that the Lokpal Bill could not be passed in Rajya Sabha. However the government is committed to enactment of an effective Lokpal Act," he added.
The Rajya Sabha debated the Lokpal Bill on December 29, but the bill could not be passed as the House was adjourned without a vote.
