Srinagar, Jan 23: The District Development Commissioner Srinagar, Baseer Ahmed Khan Monday called Jamia Market traders to his office chambers to discuss development of the historic market, allegedly neglected for years by successive regimes.
The DDC who has visited the Nowhatta area at-least four times in the past few days discussed the development with the traders’ delegation led by their President Javed Ahmed Zargar.
An official handout said the “meeting discussed the removal of illegal structures in and around Jamia Masjid, proper parking space and other issues.”
“Khan was informed that land measuring five thousand feet has already been acquired around Jamia Masjid for beautification purpose.
The Jamia Masjid Traders Federation made certain suggestions regarding construction of main gate and drainage system in Jamia Masjid.
“It was given out that Rs. 2.32 lakhs are being expended on the drainage system. The District Development Commissioner, Srinagar, ordered immediate installation of streetlights and four mass lights inside Jamia Masjid. Baseer Khan also ordered setting up of a Fire Station in the vicinity of the Jamia Masjid,” the handout added.
Jamia Market Traders Federation President said the meeting was positive as the DDC “showed keen interest in the development of the area.”
While hailing the DDC, Zargar said he was optimistic that the much awaited development of the marketplace would soon be started.
“DC Sahib candidly listened to our problems and assured redressal,” he said.
When contacted Khan said the development of the area including road widening proposals were discussed in detail with the traders.
“I had called officials of other departments as well so that things could be discussed with a wider perspective,” the DDC said.
Pertinently for the past few months, Greater Kashmir has been continuing a sustained campaign over the neglect of Jamia Market.
