Bad weather worsens Habba Kadal fears

Admin fails to demolish dilapidated buildings

SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI

Srinagar, Jan 6: The ongoing bad weather conditions have worsened the fears of Habba Kadal residents about the fate of over a dozen dilapidated buildings, in the area, which the authorities had identified for demolition years back but were never razed to ground.
The residents fear that the old dilapidated houses, uninhabited for years could collapse anytime triggering disaster.
They said the structures were declared “unsafe” by the government several years back but till now no action was taken to demolish them.
“These old structures can collapse anytime and result in heavy loss of life and property,” said Ghulam Ahmed Wani a local flanked by others.
The concerned MLA, Shamima Firdous claims to have ordered the concerned department to remove the structures within three months.
Even though the Roads and Building department officials have identified the risky lot, they said the demolition was awaited for the want of funds.
The fund requisition, they said, was sent some four months back to the then District Development Commissioner Srinagar. “But we’re yet to get funds,” they said.
Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party leader and Habba Kadal native Muhammad Aslam Laigaroo said “government’s failure to bring down these deadly buildings speaks volumes of its callousness towards Srinagar in general and Shaher-e-Khaas in particular.”
“The risk to the life and property of Habba Kadal people has exposed NC led government’s fake concern towards Srinagar,” Laigaroo alleged.
