SPCB asks HCC not to pollute Bandipora stream

GK IMPACT

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Jan 6: Taking cognizance of the reports appearing in Greater Kashmir about the pollution caused by the construction work of Kishan Ganga Power Project, being undertaken by Hindustan Construction Corporation (HCC) in Bandipora district, the J&K State Pollution Control Board has asked the HCC not to damage the environment in the area.
The spokesman of the SPCB said acting on the complaint of the locals that pollutants emanating from various units of the HCC are drained into the Bonar Nallah which in turn pollutes Madhumati and Zaingair canal, the SPCB’s Regional Director Kashmir recently made on the-spot assessment and asked the HCC to construct sedimentation tanks at the spots within 20 days.
The Regional Director also took up the matter with the district administration and asked it to take due care of the environmental protection while the power project is constructed, the spokesman said.
The Bonar Nallah is not only a source of water for residents living downstream at Pazalpora, Kralpora and other villages, but its water is used for growing paddy in the nearby areas. The Nallah irrigates thousands of kanals of paddy land and is abounds with Trout fish.
