AFSPA revocation

This refers to the news “Srinagar, Jammu to get Azadi from AFSPA.” The Armed Forces Special Powers Act has been under debate and discussion for more than two years now, in particular. It is sad that New Delhi took so long to take a call on this issue. The Act has to go in the larger interest of Kashmir. Having such acts in place in the Valley belies the Govt claims on normalcy in Kashmir. The Government often says that militancy levels in the state have come down considerably. If it is so, what is the need for acts like AFSPA? Such acts only help alienate Kashmiris further and causes further trust deficit between Kashmir and New Delhi. It is good to see the GoI getting serious in lifting the Act from Srinagar and Jammu. However it must go from other parts of the state as well, especially in view of the huge tourist season that Kashmir is witnessing. Otherwise such Acts send a signal that Kashmir is disturbed, which it is not!
