Chahal-Bijhama road in shambles
Chahal (Boniyar): The vital road connecting Chahal with Bijhama in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is in a dilapidated state hampering smooth flow of vehicular movement and causing immense hardships to commuters.
Locals blame movement of tippers and trucks carrying gypsum for pathetic condition of the road.
“The vehicles leading to Srinagar from Bijhama carry gypsum loads more than the permissible limits. As a result during transit, gypsum scatters on road damaging macadam and causing countless potholes,” the locals said.
The locals said they had tried to stop the movement of these vehicles but in vain. “Besides damaging roads, these vehicles move fast posing risk to pedestrians,” they said.
They also said many people have developed health problems due to dust of gypsum stones scattered on roads here. “It is difficult to walk on road here as it is covered with dust of gypsum stones,” said Danish a student.
Sarpanch of Tathamulla Parveez Khan acknowledges that the movement of heavy vehicles carrying about 20 tons of load result in bad condition of the road. “However, people are also responsible for bad condition of roads as they make road cuts for purpose of irrigating their fields,” Khan added.
